Medicare Supplements

What is Medicare Supplement Insurance?

Medicare supplement insurance, also known as Medigap, serves as a valuable ally in covering some of the healthcare expenses that original Medicare might not handle. We're talking about things like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles - those pesky out-of-pocket costs.

But wait, there's more! Some Medigap policies also step in to provide coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn't touch. Take, for example, medical care during your international adventures outside the U.S. Some companies may offer discount benefits for Dental or Vision.

If you're on Original Medicare and you've got a Medigap policy in your corner, here's how it works: Medicare pays its share of the Medicare-approved amount for your covered healthcare costs, and then your trusty Medigap policy takes care of its share.

Now, it's important to note that a Medigap policy and a Medicare Advantage Plan are two different beasts. Medicare Advantage Plans are a way to get your Medicare benefits, while a Medigap policy serves as a supplement, enhancing your Original Medicare benefits. They're like the reliable sidekick to your healthcare journey.

Important Things to Know About Medicare Supplement Coverage.

  •  If you're already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan and thinking about adding a Medigap policy to the mix, it's doable. But there's a crucial detail to remember: you should make sure you can leave your Medicare Advantage Plan before your Medigap policy kicks in because you can't have both.

  • Now, let's talk costs. For your Medigap policy, you'll be paying a monthly premium to the private insurance carrier. This premium is in addition to the monthly Part B premium that you pay to Medicare. It's like having a little extra insurance cushion.

  • Keep in mind that a Medigap policy is designed to cover one person. If both you and your spouse want Medigap coverage, we're more than happy to help you set up two separate policies. We've got options for everyone. Some companies provide a household discount.

  • Here's a reassuring tidbit: Any standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable, even if you encounter health issues along the way. That means the insurance company can't give you the boot from your Medigap policy as long as you keep up with those premium payments. Your coverage stays steady, no matter what.
